Abstract:The composition and position of the monoraphid diatoms in classification systems are discussed. The main morphological and taxonomical features of monoraphid genera are given. Three morphological clusters (groups) of monoraphid taxa are proposed based on two important features: the direction of distal and proximal raphe fissures and the striation/areolation.
