Composition Dependence of Normal Spectral Emissivity of Liquid Ni–Al Alloys

Abstract: Ni-Al alloys are good candidates for the fabrication high-efficiency gas turbine blades. The Ni-Al system is also important as a solution for AlN crystal growth. To accurately model the casting process for turbine blade fabrication and design solution growth techniques for AlN, the thermophysical properties of the liquid alloy are required. In this study, the normal spectral emissivity of Ni-Al liquid alloys was measured using the electromagnetic levitation technique under a static magnetic field. Both the mel… Show more

“…Electromagnetic levitation (EML), allows one to hold in space an electrically conductive sample both in its solid and liquid state, without having any contact with it and thus preventing its contamination. EML is widely applied in material science, both in microgravity and in terrestrial conditions [1][2][3][4][5]. Combination of EML with microgravity is advantageous since it permits reducing of electromagnetic forces and the liquid sample tends to keep spherical shape.…”

“…Electromagnetic levitation allows a metal sample, both in the solid and in the liquid state, to be held in space without any support due to the electromagnetic forces [1][2][3]. Coupling of this method with microgravity reduces the problem of levitation to the stabilization of a sample near an equilibrium point and provides multiple advantages because of the spatial symmetry of the system.…”
