Composition of oil

Abstract: International trade in palm oil has increased considerably over the last ten years, and so too has the trade in processed palm oil products, especially palm fractions. It is important to establish reliable purity criteria for palm oil, not only because of the commercial need to verify oil authenticity, but also to comply with foodstuff labelling legislation in many countries.Palm kernel and coconut oils both contain about 47% lauric acid. This gives the oils close similarities in physical and chemical properti… Show more

“…Rossell et al (1985) and Laureles et al (2002) have reported lauric acid values of 45.9-50.3%, and 47.3-52.6%, respectively, for coconut oil from the Philippines (46.2-48.7%), Papua New Guinea (47.1-50.3%), Vanuatu (47.1-48.4%), North Sulawesi (45.9%) and Sri Lanka (49.3-52.6%) (Rossell et al, 1985;Laureles et al 2002). In this study the lauric acid value of all the UCNOs (49.11 to 51.66%) and RBDCNO (50.90%) of Indian origin were comparable with the results reported by Rossell et al, (1985) and Laureles et al (2002). But, the VCNO showed a significantly higher lauric acid content (55.75%) as compared to UCNOs and RBDCNO.…”

“…It constitutes about 45% of the palm nut of the palm oil Elaeis guineensis (Rossell, 1985;Goh, 1993 and Kadir et al, 1998). It can be processed into palm kernel oil (PKO) and palm kernel cake (PKC).…”

“…There are many reported cases of adulteration practices for highly priced vegetable oils and fats such as virgin olive oil, cocoa butter etc. [1][2][3][4]. As extra virgin olive oil is a premium-product, which is short in supply and high in demand, there has always been temptations for its adulteration with cheaper oils [5] or other sub-branded olive products such refined olive oil and olive pomace oil [6].…”
