Composition of the essential oil of Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata Hook Fil. et Thomson forma genuina) from Madagascar

Abstract: The essential oil of ylang-ylang was fractionated by distillation and column chromatography, and 17 compounds were isolated in pure form and identified by using spectroscopic methods. The volatile, oxygenated, and hydrocarbon fractions were analyzed, and 52 compounds were identified as far as possible by GC-MS, IR, and and 13C NMR. Among them, -cedrene, a-amorphene, 7-bisabolene, and -, 7-, and -cadinols were tentatively identified. 7-Muurolene and (E,£)-farnesyl acetate were conclusively identified for the fi… Show more

“…Table 1 contains the list of identified components, including calculated retention indices and determined volume fractions of components. In general the list of identified compounds agrees reasonably with the available results of analytical studies of ylang-ylang oil in the literature [15][16][17][18][19]. Note that we were able to identify about 30 additional compounds in comparison with previous results [18], such as pentyl acetate, sabinene, a-terpinolene, p-cymene, etc.…”

“…Compound identification was performed by computer library searches and retention-time matches of the natural plant products with authentic standards on the Supelcowax 10 column and a 30-m x 0.32-mm AT-5 column (5% phenyl, 95% dimethylsiloxane, Alltech Associates) operated as described for GC-MS analyses. Authentic samples of volatile compounds were obtained from commercial sources except for (E)-4,8-dimethyl 1,3,7-nonatriene, which was donated by J. H. Tumlinson (USDA, Gainesville, Florida), and (E,E)-cz-farnesene and germacrene D, which were isolated from the hydrocarbon fraction of ylang-ylang oil (Gaydou et al, 1986).…”

“…Its essential oil is obtained by steam distillation from fresh matured ylang-ylang flowers and is used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries as an active component of antibacterials and in aromatherapy. Its chemical composition is predominantly of volatile terpenes and benzenoid and phenylpropanoid components [18][19][20]. An odorant solution at 10% was obtained by diluting 0.5 ml of the essential oil (stored in 20-ml yellow glass bottles) in 4.5 ml of an odorless solvent (glycerine, paraffin, or mineral oil) immediately before use.…”
