Density functional theory calculation was conducted to determine the optoelectronic properties of bismuth titanate sillenite (Bi12TiO20) and perovskite-like (Bi4Ti3O12) structures. The lattice parameters were experimentally obtained from Rietveld analysis. The density functional perturbation theory approach was used with the standard Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof functional and screened Coulomb hybrid Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof functional to investigate the electronic structure and absorption coefficient. Both compounds have good carrier transport properties, low effective hole and electron masses, high dielectric constant, and low exciton binding energy.

This paper presents the preparation of bismuth titanate (Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 ; BIT) and praseodymium-substituted bismuth titanate (Bi 4¹x Pr x Ti 3 O 12 : BPT) with various molarities of praseodymium ion (Pr 3+ : x = 0.2, 0.6 and 1.0) via a fuel-free low-temperature self-combustion synthesis process (FLSC). FLSC offers a remarkable ability to produce polycrystalline BIT powder with an orthorhombic structure, and BPT powder with a tetragonal structure. The substitution of Pr 3+ into the BIT system retarded the crystal growth, as revealed by the decrease in the crystallite size from 106 to 41 nm by incorporating Pr 3+ with x = 1.0. Besides, the substitution caused the structure transformation from platelet-like structure to aquiaxed structure. Such structure provides an essential role to enhance the ceramic density. High relative density of about 99.3% was achieved for the BPT ceramic compared to BIT ceramic with a relative density of 89.7%. The results underline the possibility to control the anisotropic grain growth of BIT ceramic by incorporating Pr 3+ into the BIT system through FLSC. The ceramic sintered at 1100°C exhibited high dielectric permittivity (269.38) with a low dissipation factor as low as 0.00203.

The use of diffraction in the characterization of piezoelectric materials

X-ray and neutron diffraction have become powerful characterization tools in materials research. Their leading use in the characterization of piezoelectric ceramics includes the determination of structure, phase evolution, crystallographic texture, and lattice strain. The inherent electromechanical coupling of piezoelectric materials also allows the direct characterization of the converse piezoelectric effect. New advances in diffraction capabilities have recently enabled new problem solutions within this field. For example, the use of microdiffraction has the potential to characterize structural defects including cracks and domain walls. The development of time-resolved techniques has further opened doors to characterizing ferroelectrics in real-time under the application of cyclic electric fields. These recent advances as well as traditional uses of X-ray and neutron diffraction in the characterization of piezoelectric materials and the phenomenon of piezoelectricity are explored in this review. A focus is on characterization of bulk, polycrystalline ceramics, though novel approaches in thin films and single crystals are also reviewed. Challenges and future opportunities are discussed.
