Compounds of Antibacterial Agent Ciprofloxacin and Magnesium – Crystal Structures and Molecular Modeling Calculations

Abstract: Two novel magnesium complexes of the quinolone antibacterial drug ciprofloxacin (cfH) were isolated and their crystal structures determined. In both compounds, bidentate O,OЈ-bonding of quinolone molecules to the metal was observed and it was also found that a very extensive intermolecular hydrogen-bond framework is present.

“…Nevertheless, the existence of hypochromism for complexes 2 and 3 could be considered as a first evidence that the binding of the complexes involving intercalation between the base pairs of CT DNA cannot be ruled out [13][14][15][29][30][31][32][33][37][38][39][40]. The different behaviors between the complexes may be attributed either to the steric effect due to N-donor ligands or to a combination of steric and chelate effects provided by the phen and bipy ligands in 2 and 3, respectively [12].…”

“…Our studies have been focused on the coordination chemistry and the biological activity of carboxylate-containing antimicrobial [13][14][15][37][38][39][40][41] or anti-inflammatory [12,[42][43][44][45] agents with metal ions in an attempt to examine their mode of binding and possible biological relevance. Taking into consideration the reported biological role and activity of nickel and its complexes, the significance of the quinolones in medicine and the fact that metal complexes with drugs may exhibit more pronounced biological properties in comparison to the free drugs, we have initiated the study of nickel(II) complexes with quinolone antimicrobial agents [30][31][32][33].…”

“…In the reported structurally characterized metal-quinolone complexes, the quinolone ligands may act in bidentate mode (neutral [54,58] or deprotonated [34,59,60]) coordinated to the metal via the pyridone oxygen and a carboxylato oxygen or in tridentate deprotonated [61] mode bound to metal ion through the pyridone oxygen, a carboxylato oxygen atom and a piperazine nitrogen atom. Furthermore, the quinolonate ion may act as a counter cation [54].…”

“…Our studies have been focused on the coordination chemistry of carboxylate-containing herbicides [50][51][52][53], anti-inflammatory [19][20][21]54,55] or antimicrobial [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63] agents with metal ions in an attempt to examine their mode of binding and possible biological relevance. In addition, we have reported studies on the interaction of metal complexes with nucleic acids and their biological activity.…”
