Comprehensive Analysis of the COBRA-Like (COBL) Gene Family in Gossypium Identifies Two COBLs Potentially Associated with Fiber Quality

Abstract: COBRA-Like (COBL) genes, which encode a plant-specific glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored protein, have been proven to be key regulators in the orientation of cell expansion and cellulose crystallinity status. Genome-wide analysis has been performed in A. thaliana, O. sativa, Z. mays and S. lycopersicum, but little in Gossypium. Here we identified 19, 18 and 33 candidate COBL genes from three sequenced cotton species, diploid cotton G. raimondii, G. arboreum and tetraploid cotton G. hirsutum acc. TM-1… Show more

“…A subset of COBRAs appear to be specialized for function in secondary cell walls, which typically consist of 40%-50% cellulose and are thickened to provide rigidity (Zhong and Ye 2015). COBRAs are therefore implicated in regulating wood and fiber quality (Gritsch et al 2015;Niu et al 2015).…”

“…For example, a gene encoding cellulose synthase (Solyc07g043390), the catalytic moiety required for the synthesis of cellulose microfibrils, was expressed at higher levels in the gpat6-a mutant. Conversely, the expression of a COBRA-like gene (SlCOBL1; Solyc02g089120), which encodes a GPIanchored protein regulating epidermal cell wall thickness and cellulose formation in tomato fruit (Cao et al, 2012;Niu et al, 2015), was lower in gpat6-a. We also detected the altered expression of genes related to pectins and hemicelluloses, the matrix polysaccharides of the primary cell wall.…”

“…By taking the Pfam data as the query, the HD Zip members were identified using HMMER software, version 3.0 (Finn et al 2011). The phylogenetic tree of the HD-Zip gene family was built using MEGA 5.0 software (www.megasoftware.net) with the maximum likelihood method (Tamura et al 2011), using the parameters referred to Niu et al (2015).…”
