Comprehensive evaluation of growth characteristics, nitrogen removal capacity, and nutritional properties of three diet microalgae

Abstract: Nitrogen is one of the main pollution sources in aquaculture system. Microalgae are considered as one of the ideal bio-absorbents used in wastewater purification, due to their nitrogen removal capacity and more importantly nutritional value. Nannochloropsis oceanica, Cyclotella atomus, and Conticribra weissflogii are famous as diet microalgae. However, estimation of nitrogen removal capability and concomitant nutritional properties of the three species have been rarely reported, which was performed in this stu… Show more

“…The nitrogenous waste generated through the metabolic activities of shrimp stimulate develops and sustains the microorganisms in a biofloc community which is dominated by bacteria species. It has earlier been established by researchers that only 20–30 % of nitrogen administered in the diet of aquatic organisms is obtained at harvest [ [16] , [17] , [18] ]. Every aquaculture system is confronted with the nitrogen balance whose residual by-products constitute great harm to the grown animals.…”

“…Nitrogen is not only one of the main elements causing eutrophication in water bodies but also a major component of proteins [1]. Microalgae are considered an ideal method for nitrogen pollution control in water bodies due to their high efficiency in nitrogen absorption and high protein content [2]. However, the process of harvesting and separating microalgae from water bodies is challenging.…”
