Comprehensive Evaluation of the Control Efficiency of Heavy-Metal Emissions during Two-Step Thermal Treatment of Sewage Sludge

Abstract: Recycling the phosphorus in sludge by incineration has received great interest at home and abroad. However, heavy metals (HMs) is a restrictive factor for SS thermal treatment. In this study, a comprehensive evaluation method was adopted to evaluate the comprehensive control efficiency of HM emissions during two-step thermal treatment (incineration–calcination). The effects of temperature, calcination time, and additives (CaO and NaCl) on leaching rates, stabilized rates, and comprehensive control efficiency o… Show more

“…Концентрация микроэлементов является огран ичивающим фактором не только при внесении в компоненты окружающей среды, но также и при термической обработке ОСВ. Ранее проведенные исследования свидетельствуют о необходимости комплексного кон троля выбросов тяжелых металлов при сж игании и прокаливании ОСВ [62].…”

“…Sewage sludge of high moisture content (>80 wt %) is a major byproduct from wastewater treatment plants, the high annual production of which poses great challenges for its proper disposal or use. Sewage sludge is mainly applied to land for agricultural purposes, disposed via landfilling, and/or incinerated for energy recovery, , which are expensive because of high energy inputs and long transportation distance, necessitating the development of novel alternative technologies. One of the promising technologies is smoldering combustion that has been extensively investigated from a fire safety perspective. , It is a flameless and heterogeneous oxidation reaction limited by the diffusion rate of oxygen into the surface of fuels .…”
