Comprehensive Evaluations on the Error Characteristics of the State‐of‐the‐Art Gridded Precipitation Products Over Jiangxi Province in 2019

Abstract: Accurate knowledge of the precipitation estimates with high quality and fine spatiotemporal resolutions is crucial to the precipitation science communities, especially over poorly gauged regions. In this study, we apply various validation metrics to comprehensively evaluate three latest model‐based and satellite‐based precipitation products, namely the fifth‐generation global atmospheric analysis data set of the European Center for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) (ERA5), ERA5‐Land and Integrated Multi‐s… Show more

“…The evaluation for precipitation patterns showed that both the satellite and reanalysis products could generally capture precipitation seasonal cycle and spatial distributions. Similar results are found in mainland China 112 , the Himalayas 113 , South Asia 114 , Brazil 115 , and Europe 116 for IMERG, as well as in eastern China 117 , 118 , the Tibetan Plateau 119 , the Pamir Plateau 45 , and Africa 120 for ERA5. With direct corrections by monthly GPCC observations, IMERG FR provided more accurate monthly estimates, and performed best in capturing the seasonal cycle and annual spatial distributions.…”

“…Chen et al (2021) found that the high-resolution ERA5-Land and ERA5 datasets well present the observed spatial pattern of precipitation but with a generally overestimated amount in the southern slope of central Himalaya. Hong et al (2021) found that ERA5 and ERA5-Land precipitation products have similar spatiotemporal error characteristics, and ERA5-Land performs better than ERA5 over Jiangxi Province in 2019. Wu et al (2021) evaluated the ERA5-Land soil moisture (SM) datasets in China, and the results indicated that ERA5-Land showed a larger bias in (semi-) humid areas (0.06 m 3 /m 3 on an average) and had higher temporal precision in the southern areas in China, which are mostly determined by their SM climatology.…”

“…The ability of the dataset to capture precipitation events is good; this has certain advantages for the daily-scale analysis required in this study and, most importantly, makes it easy to obtain data 32,33 . However, no matter how high the precision of the raster data, values can only be provided on a certain latitude and longitude grid 34,35 . In the process of extracting rainfall data corresponding to landslide events at specific spatial locations www.nature.com/scientificreports/ and time points, spatial linear interpolation was further adopted, ignoring the non-stationary variability of the rainfall in the spatial and temporal distribution 36 .…”
