“…42 Similarly, in a series of patients with ovarian cancer receiving standard cytotoxic chemotherapy, the need for functional assistance (defined as living at home with assistance or living in an institution with medical assistance) was found to be predictive of severe treatment-related toxicity (P ϭ .048). 43 Observational data have indicated that pain severity in older adults with cancer is correlated directly with ADL and IADL disability. 44 Functional impairment has also been linked more recently to psychological status in older adults with cancer.…”

“…Presence of depression in cancer patients has been linked to a reduced chance of survival in a variety of tumours, e.g. breast cancer [8] and ovarian cancer [9]. A number of studies reported a close interaction between depression and QoL in cancer patients [10,11].…”

“…Although the predictive markers identified in those two studies differ somewhat, the common factors were chemotherapy characteristics (type, number of agents, and dose) and dependence for instrumental activities of daily living (instrumental adls), a measure of patient function. Several other studies of older cancer patients have also shown that functional status appears to predict severe chemotherapy toxicity, treatment interruption, and dose reduction 2,4,8 , suggesting that patient function is a key factor in predicting toxicity from chemotherapy.…”

“…As a result, chronologic age is not always equal to functional or physiologic age. Furthermore, multiple studies have shown that chronologic age alone is not an accurate predictor of prognosis or chemotherapy tolerance [2][3][4][5][6] .…”
