Comprehensive Graphic-Based Display of Clinical Pathology Laboratory Data

Abstract: In this age of ever-increasing demands for and uses of patient data, technologic advancements in the form of electronic patient records permit improved data access and prompt retrieval of higher quality patient care data, with more versatility in display, facilitating the integration of information concerning patients over time and between settings of care, which is in turn more accessible for use by practitioners and provides more efficient and effective decision support in areas of patient care. The graphic … Show more

“…Experiments of using graphical representation of medical information have been conducted for improving patient education [6][7][8][9] and interpreting laboratory data [10,11]. Some clinically-relevant extremely complex information types, such as genetic and microbiome analyses are typically reported using graphic representation [12].…”

“…[13] As the complexity of laboratory testing increases there is a growing need for well designed, intuitive reports that convey complex information to clinicians. Graphical trending of serial laboratory measures is well established in laboratory information systems and electronic medical records and its utility has been widely acknowledged;[46] however, additional graphical elements are being incorporated into both paper and electronic test result reports such as specimen photographs, karyotype images, flow cytometry plots, gel images, charts of ancillary information, links to outside web-based information, and even interactive calculators. [7–9] Although graphical reports have potential to convey information more effectively than standard text-based reports, studies have not measured how much clinicians value novel graphical features in laboratory reports.…”
