Crown ether is widely used in water purification because of its ring structure and good selective adsorption of specific heavy metals. However, its high cost and difficulty in recycling limit the purification of heavy metals in water. The anisotropic [2,4]-dibenzo-18-crown-6-modified bamboo pulp aerogel (DB18C6/PA) is successfully synthesized by microwave irradiation and directional freezing technology. The physical and chemical properties of DB18C6/PA are analyzed by FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, TGA, surface area and porosity analyzers. Single or multivariate systems containing Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ are used as adsorbents. The effects of the DB18C6 addition amount, pH, initial concentration and adsorption temperature on the adsorption of DB18C6/PA are systematically explored. Pseudo-first-order kinetic models, pseudo-second-order kinetic models and the isothermal adsorption models of Langmuir and Freundlich are used to fit the experimental data. The adsorption selectivity is analyzed from the distribution coefficient and the separation factor, and the adsorption mechanism is discussed. The results show that anisotropic DB18C6/PA has the characteristics of 3D directional channels, high porosity (97.67%), large specific surface area (103.7 m2/g), good thermal stability and regeneration (the number of cycles is greater than 5). The surface has a variety of functional groups, including a hydroxyl group, aldehyde group, ether bond, etc. In the single and multivariate systems of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+, the adsorption process of DB18C6/PA conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the results conform to the Freundlich adsorption isothermal model (a few of them conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isothermal model), indicating that chemical adsorption and physical adsorption are involved in the adsorption process, and the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic process. In the single solution system, the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ by DB18C6/PA are 129.15, 29.85 and 27.89 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption selectivity of DB18C6/PA on Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ is in the order of Pb2+ >> Cu2+ > Cd2+.

In this work, we investigate V(V) sorption on amorphous and modified silica. Silicon dioxide was obtained from the metallurgical slag. The impact of modification on vanadium sorption was studied. The surface was modified with hydrazides (HDs) and dimethylhydrazides (DMHDs) of the tertiary carbonic Versatic acids CH3R1R2CC(O)OH of the C10–19 fractions. The optimal sorption conditions on the unmodified sorbent were pH 4, 1 h, and 40 °C. The sorption capacity of V(V) ions increased with surface modification. For modified sorbents, the range of action shifted to a more acidic area (2.0–3.0), where the HV10O285− polyanion formed a complex with N′,N′-dimethylhydrazide groups. When studying the kinetics of the V(V) sorption process on silica samples, the optimum time of adsorption equilibrium establishment (10 min) and reaction mechanism were determined. The sorption process was significantly accelerated by surface modification. The vanadium sorption process is described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. The study of adsorption isotherms revealed that the vanadium sorption isotherm corresponds to the Langmuir equation. The differences in the extraction of vanadium ions are explained by different sorption mechanisms, which are associated with the variety of vanadium forms in the solution.
Cement kiln dust (CKD), a by-product of cement manufacturing, has been largely underutilized despite its potential as an eco-friendly adsorbent for wastewater treatment. This study addresses the knowledge gap regarding CKD’s effectiveness in removing heavy metals from wastewater residuals. A comprehensive experimental program was conducted to optimize key parameters such as the pH (6–9), contact time, sorbent dosage, and initial heavy metal concentrations using a batch equilibrium technique. The results demonstrated that CKD can effectively remove heavy metals, achieving removal efficiencies of 98% for Pb, 94% for Zn, 92% for Cu, and 90% for Cd within just 4 h of treatment. Importantly, CKD not only provided high adsorption efficiency but also resulted in a significant reduction in the formation of hazardous solid sludge, a major concern in traditional wastewater treatment methods. The adsorption data closely matched the Langmuir isotherm model, further validating CKD’s potential as a sustainable, cost-effective solution for reducing heavy metal contamination in wastewater while minimizing the environmental impact.
