Compressive Shear Strength of Reinforced Concrete Walls at High Ductility Levels

Abstract: The amount of energy dissipated during an earthquake depends on the type of failure of the concrete element. Shear failure should be avoided because less energy is spent than that due to bending failure. Compression controlled failure is usually avoided by increasing the thickness of a wall. Considering that the current code largely decreases this strength, this becomes hard to achieve in practice. Because of that, the analysis described in this paper is made to determine the reason for a large strength reduct… Show more

“…In this paper, focus will be on reinforced concrete beams which have low or zero axial forces, so it plays little importance and will not be explained further. Detailed background of how axial force should be added to the model is explained in [65]. For columns, confinement of the whole element is usually made, not just the compression area.…”

“…In this regard, the continuous assessment and monitoring of the seismic safety and vulnerability of buildings is a challenging task, especially when large-area evaluations are required [3]. The construction sector plays a significant role in the alleviation of the effects and consequences caused by earthquakes and new technologies, products, systems, design approaches are regularly introduced to a broader community [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…The efficiency of the concrete element is inherently linked to the quality of the concrete (Kišiček et al, 2020). Indeed, the assessment of concrete efficiency relies largely on compressive strength, which is one of the key indicators (Merabti., 2022).…”
