“…In line with this assertion, pramipexole during encoding blocked the discrimination between high reward stimuli and low reward stimuli in a reward learning task (Santesso et al, 2009;Pizzagalli et al, 2008). This interpretation also fits well with reports of increases in compulsive behavior in patients with restless leg syndrome and Parkinson disease treated with pramipexole (Pourcher, Remillard, & Cohen, 2010;Weintraub et al, 2010;Aiken, 2007). It is quite possible that these patients feel the urge to perform certain maladaptive behavior because pramipexole leads to a blunting of reward contingent consolidation of adaptive behavior during sleep.…”

“…The estimated prevalence of ICDs among RLS patients on dopamine agonist treatment has varied from 5% to 17%. [21][22][23][24] In one of the few controlled studies on the topic, Cornelius and colleagues 21 found that RLS patients on dopaminergic treatment had a 17% prevalence of ICDs compared with 6% in a control group with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and 8% in a group of RLS patients not receiving dopamine agonists, a difference that was statistically significant only for the OSA control group. Factors that have been associated with increased numerical likelihood of developing ICDs on dopamine agonist include higher dose of dopamine agonist, young age at RLS onset, family history of gambling disorders, and female gender.…”

“…Sleep disturbances, including sleep fragmentation and daytime sleepiness, are more common in PD patients with ICDs than PD alone and healthy controls [9]. Similar patterns of sleep disturbance have been linked to impulsive behaviour in other related disorders such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) [10,11], both of which have been associated with low serum levels of the iron storage protein, ferritin [12,13]. Moreover, in a study of children with ADHD, Oner and colleagues (2012) identified a relationship between serum ferritin and hyperactivity scores [14], presenting a possible marker for broader impulse control conditions.…”
