Computational fluid dynamics study of Savonius rotors using OpenFOAM

Abstract: In this work, two-dimensional models of Savonius rotors are simulated using OpenFOAM® in order to predict the aerodynamic performance of small-scale vertical-axis wind turbines. The results are reported analyzing the aerodynamic performance and forces acting on the rotors. Power coefficient, [Formula: see text], is compared with experimental data for each operation point, and for three different geometries. Simulations with first- and second-order discretization schemes are carried out and compared, both quant… Show more

“…For the last few decades, CFD has been widely employed in wind turbine design and performance assessments, lowering the number of experiments needed for performance testing of various configurations. 44,45 k- ω SST turbulence model, a two-equation turbulence model from the family of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models, gives a trade-off between computational accuracy and computation time. When compared to experimental data, k- ω SST model proved its success in predicting the boundary layer velocity profile for adverse pressure gradient separated flows.…”

“…Passing to the third level of simulation of aerodynamic flows, it is possible to state that calculations on the basis of RANS equations are becoming widely used in industrial practice. Sun et al [11] studied operating variations of a Darrieus VAWT by means of RANS equations, and Gonzalez Madina et al [12] studied that of a Savonius [13] VAWT.…”

“…Mereu et al [19] investigated Savonius turbines as an alternative for power generation in urban areas. Madina et al [20] investigated the performance of vertical-axis wind turbines. Mauro et al [21] conducted a numerical study to examine the effect of the duct blockage on the performance of the Savonius wind turbine's rotor.…”
