The shells are structures which resist mainly by the inherent properties of its forms when they are requested by several actions, enabling constructions extremely slender and different architecture. The property of resistance is even more evident when the shapes of the shells are optimized to obtain the structural behavior in membrane regime with bending stresses no or negligible However, design of free-form shells are complex due to the computational difficulties of its generation, since the three-dimensional structures with shapes optimized of shell cannot be represented by mathematical equations. This paper aims to present a computational approach to facilitate the generation of optimized shapes of shells through the development of a software generator of membranes with different polygonal plants. After the initial modeling of a flat mesh formed by triangular elements and automatically generated, the computational generation of the three-dimensional shapes is performed by means of Finite Element Method considering the membranes subjected to large displacements and large deformations. The software for meshing initial plan through a standard set was developed in C programming language, with capacity to generate information relating to Finite Element Method such as the coordinates and nodal incidence of triangular elements with six degrees of freedom per node. The structures in shell generated through flexible membranes are polygonal projection with a minimum of three sides, and its boundary conditions are the regions of the vertices that remain fixed after the application of the loadings. The various models of optimized shapes depend of the numbers of fixed supports, and are obtained by varying the intensity of the load actions on the membrane. Several models of shapes obtained are presented to corroborate the results obtained.

The article presents author’s propositions for shaping free forms of buildings sensitive to harmonious incorporation into built or natural environments. Complex folded structures of buildings roofed with regular shell structures are regarded as the most useful in creative shaping the free forms that can easily adapt to various expected environmental conditions. Three more and more sophisticated methods are proposed for creating variously conditioned free form structures. The first method allows the possibility of combining many single free forms into one structure and leaves the designer full freedom in shaping regular or irregular structures. The second, more sophisticated method introduces additional rules supporting the designer's spatial reasoning and intuition in imposing regularity of the shapes of the building structure and its roof shell structure. The third, most sophisticated method introduces additional conditions allowing the optimization of the regular shapes and arrangement of complete shell roof segments on the basis of an arbitrary reference surface and a finite number of straight lines normal to the surface. This original, interdisciplinary study offers new insight into, and knowledge of, unconventional methods for the creative shaping of innovative free forms, where great possibility and significant restrictions result from geometrical and mechanical properties of the materials used. Solving a number of issues in the field of civil engineering, descriptive geometry and architecture is crucial in the process of creating these structures.

Abstract. Research on small-scale 3D printing has rapidly evolved, where numerous industrial products have been tested and successfully applied. Nonetheless, research on large-scale 3D printing, directed to large-scale applications such as construction and automotive manufacturing, yet demands a great a great deal of efforts. Large-scale 3D printing is considered an interdisciplinary topic and requires establishing a blended knowledge base from numerous research fields including structural engineering, materials science, mechatronics, software engineering, artificial intelligence and architectural engineering. This review article summarizes key topics of relevance to new research trends on large-scale 3D printing, particularly pertaining (1) technological solutions of additive construction (i.e. the 3D printers themselves), (2) materials science challenges, and (3) new design opportunities.
