Computational Social Science for Nonprofit Studies: Developing a Toolbox and Knowledge Base for the Field

Abstract: How can computational social science (CSS) methods be applied in nonprofit and philanthropic studies? This paper summarizes and explains a range of relevant CSS methods from a research design perspective and highlights key applications in our field. We define CSS as a set of computationally intensive empirical methods for data management, concept representation, data analysis, and visualization. What makes the computational methods “social” is that the purpose of using these methods is to serve quantitative, q… Show more

“…Big data and the accompanying data-driven methodologies have begun to enter philanthropic studies, partly thanks to the opportunities offered by SMU DataArts, Candid and the IRS e-file 990 dataset (Ma et al, 2021). For example, researchers have leveraged the IRS 990 e-file dataset to identify organizational activities based on mission statements, enabling research on institutions that share a particular focus or characteristic (Ma, 2021;Santamarina, Lecy, & van Holm, 2021).…”

“…If we recode the ratings as binary, the kappa score increases to 1 (i.e., perfect agreement). The application of computational social science methods is relatively new and fast-evolving (Ma et al, 2021) and more empirical studies are needed to firmly support the validity of these novel methods.…”

“…The development of computational social science harbors a wealth of opportunities for research on philanthropy (Ma et al, 2021). Computational social science analyzes "Big Data" that were not designed for research by those who created the data.…”
