Selection and evaluation of spherical acquisition trajectories for industrial computed tomography

In conventional industrial computed tomography, the source–detector system rotates in equiangular steps in-plane relative to the part of investigation. While being by far the most frequently used acquisition trajectory today, this method has several drawbacks like the formation of cone beam artefacts or limited usability in case of geometrical restrictions. In such cases, the usage of alternative spherical trajectories can be beneficial to improve image quality and defect visibility. While investigations have been performed to relate the influence of the trajectory choice in the typical metrological case of a high number of available projections, so far barely any work has been done for the case of few source–detector poses, which is more relevant in the field of non-destructive testing. In this work, we provide an overview of quantitative metrics that can be used to assess the image quality of reconstructed computed tomography volumes, discuss their advantages and drawbacks and propose a framework to investigate the performance of several non-standard trajectories with respect to previously defined regions of interest. Inspired by pseudorandom sampling methods for Monte–Carlo-algorithms, we also suggest an entirely new trajectory design, the low-discrepancy spherical trajectory, which extends the concept of equiangular planar trajectories into three dimensions and can be used for benchmarking and comparison with other spherical trajectories. Last, we use an optimization method to calculate task-specific acquisition trajectories and relate their performance to other spherical designs.

Imaging using CT Scan utilizes the nature of the material that can absorb X-rays so the intensity of X-rays that penetrate the material will be attenuated. The attenuation coefficient of the material will provide information on the physical properties of it, in the image produced by CT Scan, the attenuation coefficients of the material is related to the number of Hounsfield Unit (HU). Alginate impression material is an irreversible hydrocolloid molding material that will form a gel when reacted with water without heating treatment process. The nature of alginate gel is elastic and has a fast setting time, often used in the manufacture of dentures. Alginate scanning using CT scan can provide information on alginate gel equivalents with human body tissue by comparing the HU values obtained. Alginate impression material that has been set up by using water is formed with a size of 11 x 11 cm with a thickness varying 5 mm, 7 mm and 9 mm and then scanned using CT Scan obtained an average HU of -51, which is equivalent to soft tissue such as lipid or breast.

Multiphoton Microscopy of Oral Tissues: Review

Multiphoton microscopy (MPM) is currently acknowledged as a very powerful method for the visualization and analysis of tissues in biomedicine. It allows high resolution, deep optical sectioning and reduced photodamage. MPM does not require labeling and is deployable both in-vivo and ex-vivo, which simplifies the diagnostic procedure compared to traditional histology approaches based on excisional biopsy, tissue fixation and staining. Among the important applications of MPM in medicine, differentiation of healthy from pathological tissues has gained massive interest over the past years, but MPM is also very useful for acquiring new insights on how various pathologies originate and progress. In this work we review the use of MPM in imaging assays focused on investigating unlabeled oral tissues (teeth and oral mucosa) and discuss a series of important results which hold potential for enabling a next generation of oral tissue characterization/diagnostic frameworks. The surveyed literature shows that non-linear optical imaging tools can significantly contribute to achieve a better understanding of oral cavity tissues, by allowing the accurate analysis of morphological structures and relevant biochemical processes.
