Computed tomography guided navigation assisted percutaneous ablation of osteoid osteoma in a 7-year-old patient: the low dose approach

Abstract: Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign tumour that can cause severe pain and functional limitation to children and young adults; the treatment of choice is image-guided ablation. Due to the very small size of the lesion, detection and accurate needle placement may be challenging. Computed tomography (CT) offers very detailed imaging of the skeleton and is the modality of choice for the detection of small OO and for ablation guidance. Nevertheless, CT-guided positioning of the ablation applicator is linked to signifi… Show more

“…If we compare only the x-ray flouroscopy marking and MRI-guided drilling with the case report published by Krokidis et al 31 of CT-guided drilling with low-dose imaging, our effective doses are far below the dose published in this study. In our series, the effective dose was 0.027 mSV on average (0.0082-0.0523 mSV).…”

“…Decisions regarding imaging guidelines should take into account patient factors, availability, cost, radiation dose, and operator preferences. A navigation system has also been developed, which offers more accurate needle placement and can also predict the area of ablation [176] (Fig. 8).…”
