Computed Tomography Measurement of Hepatic Steatosis: Prevalence of Hepatic Steatosis in a Canadian Population

Abstract: Background/Aims. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease that can progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This retrospective chart review investigated the incidence of hepatic steatosis in London, Ontario, Canada. Methods. A retrospective chart review was performed on emergency room (ER) patients undergoing nonscheduled computed tomography (CT) imaging over a six-month period in London, Ontario. CT images and reports were examined to determine presence of steatosis. Anal… Show more

“…In addition, studies reporting hepatic steatosis as an incidental finding are very likely to underestimate the true prevalence of hepatic steatosis given reliance on radiology reports to identify hepatic steatosis rather than reassessment of obtained images. The findings from Wells et al . and our study confirm this observation.…”

“…assessed hepatic steatosis using a relatively similar technique in measuring hepatic and splenic attenuation among 450 emergency patients in a Canadian cohort. Less than half of their patients had hepatic steatosis mentioned in radiology reports . Documenting hepatic steatosis in both the body and conclusion sections compared to just the body of the radiology report resulted in more frequent documentation in medical charts and discharge summaries.…”

“…Fatty liver disease (FLD) has estimated prevalence of 25%, 31%, and 24.5% in Canada, United States, and central China, [ 1 – 3 ] respectively. Moreover, nearly two-thirds of patients with obesity and type-2-diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exhibit FLD.…”

“…Data was collected for consecutive laboratory-con rmed COVID- 19 The liver CT scan used in this study was non-enhanced, which has been found to be better at measuring the hepatic Houns eld unit and presence of steatosis 20 . Measurement of attenuation of liver only on unenhanced CT scans is best for prediction of pathologic fat content.…”

“…Unenhanced CT scans have a sensitivity for steatosis ranging from 43 to 95% and a speci city of 90-100%. 20 Continuous variables were expressed as mean (range). Differences between categorical variables were examined with the chi-squared test or the Fisher's exact test as appropriate.…”
