Computed tomography of generalized lymphangiomatosis and chylothorax

Abstract: The diagnosis of lymphangiomatosis can often be made on clinical grounds with the aid of plain radiography. In children with intractable chylothorax computed tomography (CT) of the thorax may reveal the presence of a mediastinal mass but frequently in lymphangiomatosis will not demonstrate any specific features. Abdominal CT, on the other hand, may suggest the diagnosis by the association with intraabdominal lymphangioma.

“…Lymphangiomatosis, therefore, differs from the other diseases in that it presents proliferation, complex anastomoses, and, secondarily, dilatation of the lymphatic vessels. (1,2,8,9) In the chest, the process develops along the lymphatic drainage ways, in the subpleural, paraseptal, perivascular, and peribronchial regions. The vessels might contain acellular, eosinophilic and proteinaceous material, surrounded by bundles of collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells.…”

“…Retroperitoneal, mesenteric, or omental locations have been encountered in almost all patients, and pelvic involvement is an exception [11,12]. Ascites and parenchymatous involvement have been reported rarely in abdominal lymphangiomas [11,[14][15][16]. Multilocular cystic structure and very rare incidence of calcification are features similar to BCPM.…”

“…2 Lymphangiectasia can be a primary condition that is often fatal in newborns, or it can be secondary to other conditions, such as congenital heart disease or pulmonary venous obstruction, where there is abnormal drainage or an increase in lymph production. 2 Diagnosis of pulmonary lymphangiomatosis and lymphangiectasia can be made by lymphoscintigraphy, 11 computerized tomography, 12 or MRI. 13 Lung biopsy is often necessary for confirmation.…”
