Computed Tomography: Revolutionizing the Practice of Medicine for 40 Years

Abstract: Computed tomography (CT) has had a profound effect on the practice of medicine. Both the spectrum of clinical applications and the role that CT has played in enhancing the depth of our understanding of disease have been profound. Although almost 90 000 articles on CT have been published in peer-reviewed journals over the past 40 years, fewer than 5% of these have been published in Radiology. Nevertheless, these almost 4000 articles have provided a basis for many important medical advances. By enabling a deepen… Show more

“…CT 4 -often referred to as CAT scans for computed axial tomography-was invented in 1972 by Hounsfield and Cormack 20 and was adopted widely soon thereafter. CT acquires slices or cross-sectional images through the body to provide a much more detailed view of the anatomy than can be captured by plain film.…”

“…CT revolutionized medicine with a tangible reduction of morbidity and mortality [1]. Despite a long list of advantages there is a serious disadvantage represented by the fact that CT became the main source of ionizing radiation [2,3].…”

“…Computed tomography (CT) is a 3-D medical imaging tool, with extensive beneficial impact on the diagnosis, characterization and explanation of complex health issues 1 . The latest development in spiral CT with electrocardiogram gating technology is with multislice CT (MSCT) which has allowed for the acquisition of large volumes data and for the obtainment of dynamic volume imaging 2,3 .…”
