Computer‐aided Measurement of Vapor‐Liquid Equilibrium in a Still

Abstract: Isothermal vapor‐liquid equilibria were measured using a still with the aid of a computer for control of the temperature and measurement of the total pressure. The measurements were made with circulation of both the vapor and liquid phases in a still of the Rogalski and Malanowski type (1980). The isobaric vapor‐liquid equilibria were measured for the benzene + 2‐propanol system at 101.3 kPa in order to test the consistency of results obtained with this still. Isothermal vapor‐liquid equilibria were measured f… Show more

“…Both binary systems form a minimum boiling azeotrope. The azeotropic points were determined on the basis of the experimental VLE data, and are x\(AZ) = 0.743 and T(AZ) = 366.71 K for 1-propanol (1) + octane (2), and x\(AZ) = 0.899 and T(AZ) = 354.63 K for 2-propanol (1) + octane (2).…”

“…Vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data are required for engineering use such as design and operation of separation processes. As a continuation of our studies on the VLE of alkane + alkanol systems (Hiaki et al, 1992(Hiaki et al, , 1994a(Hiaki et al, -d, 1995a, the isobaric VLE of 1-butanol + octane, 2-butanol + octane, and 2-methyl-2-propanol + octane at 101.3 kPa of pressure were measured using a vapor and liquid recirculating still (Hiaki et al, 1992). One set of isobaric data (Kogan et al, 1959), which is consistent according to the results of thermodynamic consistency tests, at the same pressure condition and two sets of x-P data at 373.2 and 383.2 K (Gierycz et al, 1988) are available in the literature for 1-butanol + octane.…”

“…A schematic diagram of the isothermal VLE apparatus and associated computer is shown in Figure 1. The apparatus, which was modified in our previous work (5), consists of a VLE still, an ebulliometer for the determination of the total pressure, a Hewlett-Packard Model 3421A data acquisition/ control unit, a NEC personal computer, four solenoid valves for pressure control, two surge tanks, and a vacuum pump. The modification consisted of increasing the number of solenoid valves.…”
