Computer-Aided Qualitative Analysis of Interview Data: Some Recommendations for Collaborative Working

Abstract: In a research project on the concerns and achievements of newly qualified teachers we used a qualitative data analysis software package for the Macintosh computer. This package allows the storage of documents such as interview transcripts, the coding and indexing of text-units and provides a tool for establishing and refining categories within data. However, although a computer-aided analysis dramatically decreases the time conventionally needed for the cutting, sorting and pasting of interview data, it poses … Show more

“…If team members who have initiated such activities have left, faculty members have taken the lead with their participants. Our strategies fit with the acknowledgement that reading and coding transcripts on-screen is difficult and on-screen work needs to be supplemented by analysis of hard copies of transcripts (Ford, Oberski, & Higgins, 2000).…”

“…The discussions allowed such contextual, subjective experiences to emerge and allowed the team to come to a consensus on how to deal with them in terms of coding. As Ford et al (2000) argued, 'increased inter-rater reliability could be produced by the interpersonal dynamics and is certainly to be expected as a common vocabulary develops'.…”

“…Inter-coder reliability is an issue to be contended with when there is more than one person doing coding (Bourdon, 2001;Ford et al, 2000). While it is impossible to ensure perfect inter-coder reliability, there is nonetheless a need to ensure that the variance in interpretation is minimized as far as possible.…”

“…While there were benefits to using technology, it was also time-consuming with a significant learning curve attached for all team members. Ford, Oberski and Higgins 44 identified similar issues with their use of a computer data analysis tool NUD*IST and, in addition, noted how working patterns were altered among team members with the technology. Having a project manager to pilot test and troubleshoot technological issues was extremely valuable to this study.…”

“…Nevertheless, there were occasions where the time commitment needed to work with the technology exacerbated the tension created by the external responsibilities and constraints of team members. This is important to consider in collaborative projects as the newness factor cannot be underestimated 44 . Individual researchers have different comfort levels with technology.…”
