Computer-aided recording of automatic endoscope washing and disinfection processes as an integral part of medical documentation for quality assurance purposes

Abstract: BackgroundThe reprocessing of medical endoscopes is carried out using automatic cleaning and disinfection machines. The documentation and archiving of records of properly conducted reprocessing procedures is the last and increasingly important part of the reprocessing cycle for flexible endoscopes.MethodsThis report describes a new computer program designed to monitor and document the automatic reprocessing of flexible endoscopes and accessories in fully automatic washer-disinfectors; it does not contain nor c… Show more

“…To overcome the obstacles of paper-based documentation, new technologies are emerging to support the documentation process. Speech recognition [24,25], automated data recording [26,27], and DPP technology [14] are examples of this. Handwriting recognition is improving and being implemented in standard office software suites, but it can still lead to errors [28,29].…”

“…Researches have shown that Salmonella, Pseudomonas and Mycobacterium are the most common species transmitted by endoscopy [3], many other virus and bacterium species like HCV, HBV or even some Miscellaneous Organisms can be transmitted by endoscopy, too [4]. To prevent such medical accidents, the endoscopes must be reprocessed after being used, exactly cleaning and disinfection processes should be carried out before the next use [5] [6]. Generally, there are three brief stages for the endoscope reprocessing which are preliminary cleaning, high-level disinfection and the final cleaning [4] [7].…”

“…For example, "Eminent Spine LLC" received a warning letter in 2010 because they had not validated the cleaning procedure from their instructions to ensure that the cleaning procedure effectively removes body fluids and tissue debris [212]. Eminent Spine LLC told the FDA that their new validation testing would include the surgical instruments, which are considered to be the worst-case because they are the most difficult to clean [213].…”
