Computer-Aided System of the Mandibular Cortical Bone Porosity Assessment on Digital Panoramic Radiographs

Abstract: Objectives The loss of bone mineral density (BMD) in various sites of the body, including the mandible, is the main sign of osteoporosis. Thus, the computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system was developed for bone density assessment and patients were classified into normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis groups using a digital panoramic radiograph. Material and Methods Data of dental panoramic radiographs and corresponding BMD assessments from 123 postmenopausal women were collected. For the proposed CAD sy… Show more

“…The accuracy of the hollow-shaped topological manufacturing can be assessed through radiographic evaluation or microscopic study of the fractographs. 45 46 The study investigated the microscopic images of the produced model obtained from the topology-modified geometrical architecture constructed with direct selective laser sintering (DMLS). The analysis was performed utilizing a visual qualitative inspection.…”

“…[20][21][22][23] Along with tooth morphology, digital scans can also be used to study the various aspects of the maxillofacial bones, like their density, porosity, associated fracture, pathology, or anatomic relations. 24,25 CBCT has been extensively used to study the axial inclination, spatial orientation, and relation of the mandibular third molar to the inferior alveolar nerve canal. [26][27][28][29] Similarly, CBCT can also be used to evaluate maxillary sinus and help detect any septae or other pathology that can alter the dentoalveolar treatment planning.…”

“…A computer-aided system can be used for osteoporosis and osteopenia assessment by measuring the mandibular cortical width and texture on dental panoramic radiographs with the average system accuracy of 89.52%. 12 Osteoporosis can be associated with diseases of the oral cavity. Most often, the dentist encounters patients who report the presence of primary osteoporosis, especially when treating postmenopausal women.…”
