“…Slope angles in this section vary between 0.51 and 0.251 (Bouma et al, 1984(Bouma et al, , 1985aShor, 1985, 1986;Pickering et al, 1986). Early seismic-based studies provided information on the cross-sectional morphology of Mississippi Channel (Stuart and Caughey, 1976;Moore et al, 1978) but, as with Amazon Fan, it was not until planform mapping of the fan surface was undertaken with GLORIA sidescan sonar, that the sinuous nature of the channel was fully revealed (Garrison et al, 1982;Shor, 1985, 1986;Wen et al, 1995). Relative to Amazon Fan, sinuosity on Mississippi Fan is generally lower (maximum 1.7) and sinuous loops are smaller in dimensions (Kastens and Shor, 1986).…”

“…A series of overlapping elongate sedimentary deposits (lobes) comprise the distal part of the submarine fan beyond the main channel (Figs. 1, 2;Twichell et al 1991;Wen et al 1995;Paskevich et al 2000;Twichell et al 2009). A more detailed side scan sonar survey using the 27-30 kHz SeaMARC 1A system showed that one of the larger lobes mapped by GLORIA was broken into several sub-lobes Twichell et al 1995).…”

“…Like channels that comprising major part of modern Mississipian fan and Amazon Fan (Pickering et al, 1986;Wen et al, 1995;Wynn et al, 2007), the sinuous single deepwater channel in Alaminos canyon develops in area with similar low slope angles (<0.5 o ), but the sinuosity on channel in Alaminos fan is really lower (<1.3). Also, like other channels in Missippian fan (Kastens and Shor, 1986) and deepwater channels in West Africa (Peakall et al, 2000;Kolla et al, 2001), the sinuosity increases upward and channel narrows upward, but does not have obvious down-channel migration and sinuous loops did not arise in this area.…”
