Computer literacy and attitudes towards e-learning among first year medical students

Abstract: Background: At the Medical University of Vienna, most information for students is available only online. In 2005, an e-learning project was initiated and there are plans to introduce a learning management system. In this study, we estimate the level of students' computer skills, the number of students having difficulty with e-learning, and the number of students opposed to e-learning.

“…A study carried out by Link, who conducted a focused group discussion on faculty and students, reported that students had serious doubts about the usability and efficiency of e-learning. 10 We were able to find out certain driving and restraining forces which may influence learning, on the basis of FFA, which helps to look at all forces for and against a plan and weigh the significance of these factors individually. There have been very few instances of FFA being used as a research tool in medical education.…”

“…If the participants lack skills, it should be determined whether they are given sufficient time to react positively, or if the programme should be adjusted. A study conducted in Vienna investigated the problems that may be encountered during the activation of a university-wide Learning Management System, owing to students' limited computer literacy or negative attitudes to e-Learning (Link & Marz, 2006). The authors concluded that in order to avoid students becoming frustrated with e-Learning, they must have a suitable level of computer knowledge.…”
