Computer simulation and comparative study on the pervaporation separation characteristics of sodium alginate and its blend membranes with poly(vinyl alcohol) to separate aqueous mixtures of 1,4‐dioxane or tetrahydrofuran

Abstract: ABSTRACT:A comparative study on the pervaporation separation has been attempted for water ϩ 1,4-dioxane and water ϩ tetrahydrofuran mixtures using sodium alginate and blend membranes of sodium alginate with 5, 10, and 20 mass % of poly(vinyl alcohol). Pure sodium alginate membrane has a selectivity of 111 to water at 0.35-mol fraction of water in the feed mixture containing 1,4-dioxane while for water ϩ tetrahydrofuran mixture, the membrane selectivity to water was 291 at 0.31-mol fraction of water in the feed… Show more

“…Table 2 compares the present PV data with some of the reported data on flux and selectivity. The present results of NaAlg-PSSA(10) membrane are better than those of the published reports [16][17][18][19][20]. NaAlg, sodium alginate; CS, chitosan; pAAm, poly(acrylamide); PVA, poly(vinyl alchol); GG, guar gum; PEG, poly(ethylene glycol).…”

“…Only few articles are reported in the literature. Aminabhavi et al have developed homogeneous anion exchange membranes for the conversion of sea and brackish water into potable water by simultaneous polymerization of 4 -vinylpyridine (4 -VP) and crosslinking with epichlorohydrin (EPI) and aniline on nonwoven support cloth at different ratios [89] . The resulting membranes were quarternized with methyl iodide using hexane as a solvent.…”

“…In this research, hydrophilic NaAlg polymer was chosen as a membrane material for the dehydration studies of THF and isopropanol, since water interacts preferentially with such hydrophilic membranes than towards organics [18,19]. In our earlier studies [10,20,21], NaAlg membranes had an outstanding membrane performance compared to its blend membrane with poly(vinyl alcohol) for the PV dehydration of THF and isopropanol. This was attributed to the extraordinary permselective property of NaAlg membranes with water.…”
