Computerized assessment of cognition in schizophrenia: Promises and pitfalls of CANTAB

Abstract: CANTAB has been used successfully to highlight the range of visuo-spatial cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, producing similar results to those obtained with some traditional neuropsychological tests. Further studies validating the use of CANTAB following the standard set by Measurement And Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) are warranted.

“…Over the last decade, the CANTAB has been used in cognitive studies of both neurodegenerative disorders, such as dementia and Huntington's disease (Rahman, Sahakian, Hodges, Rogers, & Robbins, 1999;Sahakian et al, 1990), and psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, MD, and bipolar disorder (Egerhazi et al, 2013;Levaux et al, 2007;Porter, Gallagher, Thompson, & Young, 2003;Roiser & Sahakian, 2013). It has also been used successfully to detect deficits in visuospatial short-term memory in neurosurgical patients with temporal or frontal lobe excision (Owen et al, 1995).…”

“…The Affective Go/NoGo (AGN) task is also sensitive to orbitofrontal cortex function and assesses informationprocessing biases for positive and negative stimuli and response inhibition (Murphy et al 1999). We are not aware of any studies that have used the AGN task in patients with schizophrenia (for a review of the use of CANTAB in schizophrenia, see Levaux et al 2007). The specificity of the purported relationships between task performance and the frontal lobes requires further examination in schizophrenia using imaging techniques.…”

“…The first aim of CANTAB was to assess the patterns of cognitive decline in dementia in elderly individuals. However, it has been used in a wide variety of clinical populations (Fray et al, 1996;Levaux et al, 2007;Rasmussen, Soleimani, Carroll, & Hodlevskyy, 2009) with different levels of ability and ages. It has also been employed in neuropsychological research across age groups to study the development of a set of cognitive functions (De Luca et al, 2003;Luciana & Nelson, 2002).…”
