Computers, critical literacy, and first-year composition: modestly re-thinking some comfortable thoughts

Richard Zbaracki, Charles Kostelnick, and Jackie Bloimt deserve special recognition for their efforts. My family-particiilarly my children, Emily Jean and Andrew Blakely; my brother, William Paul, Jr.; my aunt Evelyn; and my husband, Fred-were steadfastly confident in me and in this lengthy project. Without the constant support and concern of my brother, I am quite sure I would not have been able to finish this after our mother's unexpected death in August 1998. I also thank Dr. Dirk Scholten for his wise prodding and patience. Finally and most especially, I thank my parents-Dr. W. Paul Blakely and VeLma A. Blakely-who gave me the priceless and unfathomable gifts of persistence and their belief in me. Their imtimely deaths form ironic bookends on either end of my doctoral work: my father died the semester I began work on the degree and my mother died the semester I was to have graduated. I deeply regret neither is here at its finish, for theirs is the strongest impact on me personally and professionally, and it is to them that I most owe this accomplishment.
