Computers in education: the association between computer use and test scores in primary school

Abstract: This paper analyses the associations between computer use in schools and at home and test scores by using TIMSS data covering over 900,000 children in fourth grade. When controlling for school fixed effects, pupils who use computers at school, especially those who use them frequently are found to achieve less than students who never use computers. Daily computer use at home is negatively associated with test scores, although monthly, and sometimes weekly, use is positively associated with pupil performance. Th… Show more

“…When the results were examined, it was concluded that there was no direct relationship between computer usage and student mathematics achievement. This study's results were consistent with previous studies, such as those by Carter et al (2017), Karlsson (2020), andYanguas (2020). Bayraktar (2001) also concluded that computer-assisted education has a negligible effect on student achievement.…”

“…T A B L E 2 Descriptive statistics level-2 variables for the USA students. Our results confirm the strong impact on science achievement by students bullied at school, school composition by student background, home educational resources, and attitude toward learning (Cairns & Dickson, 2020;Caponera & Losito, 2016;Dahl & Lochner, 2012;Davis-Kean's, 2005;Karlsson, 2022;Mishna et al, 2010;Mohammadpour et al,2015;Sandoval-Hernández & Białowolski, 2016;Tokunaga, 2010;Wiberg & Rolfsman, 2019;Yalcin et al, 2017). On the other hand, we find that most instructional strategy predictors have little effect on mean science achievement, with the exception of students work in the same ability group.…”

“…Existing literature using data from earlier years often concluded that personal usage of computers and digital devices tend to have a negative influence on students' learning. Karlsson (2022Karlsson ( ) utilized 2011Karlsson ( and 2015 waves of TIMSS fourth-grade data to associate the frequency in computer use to test scores and found that students who used computers frequently perform less than those students who never used. Furthermore, the negative correlation was seen to magnify among low-achieving students compared to their schoolmates.…”
