Concentrating PV system based on spectral separation of solar radiation

Abstract: In this paper we will describe a concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) system featuring spectral separation of the solar radiation. The newly designed concentrator structure provides both the spectral separation and the solar light concentration. The two caustics generated by the CPV system are spaced apart in such a way to illuminate two dense arrays of single junction Si and InGaP cells. Each of these PV receivers operate in a spectral region where its solar cells best perform, and thus they can be optimized inde… Show more

“…Numerous SSS designs using holographic [3][4][5][6] or dichroic [7][8][9][10] optical filters to spatially isolate solar spectral bands have been proposed. Holographic optical elements (HOE) are a versatile, inexpensive option for SSS, which can: achieve high diffraction efficiency, be used in transmission or reflection geometries, incorporate concentration, and be customized for individual designs by modifying diffracted spectral bands and dispersion characteristics [11][12][13][14] .…”

“…However, the first experimental demonstration was done by Moon et al by applying a 17-layer dichroic reflector stack [41]. More recently, there have been new investigations on spectral beam splitting systems induced by highly accurate thin film deposition technologies currently available [42][43][44][45].…”

“…Generally, high solar irradiance comes with higher ambient temperatures especially in climatic zones such as Pakistan. For such zones, energy utilization efficiency of PV systems can be improved through different methods for instances: multijunction cells [4], optical frequency shifting [5], multiple generation cells [6], hot carrier cells [7], and concentration photovoltaic system [8]. However, such methods have not been yet commercialized because of their complexity and high cost.…”
