Synchronous samples of sediment and Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) hepatopancreas, which were obtained for monitoring and assessment purposes at British Columbia, Canada, marine pulp mill sites between 1990 and 1995, were used to calculate biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) for individual chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran congeners (PCDD/Fs). The BSAFs for individual pairs of samples were highly variable, and no systematic trends were apparent in the observed accumulation factors over time, with crab size, with crab lipid concentration, with sediment percent organic carbon, or among mill sites or depositional environments. Composition and source differences in sedimentary PCDD/Fs, which are apparent as principal components analysis class separations in the sediment data set, also did not correlate with differences in BSAFs. This independence from environmental factors provides a valuable endorsement of the BASF concept for the formulation of aquatic effects-based sediment-quality criteria and human risk-assessment guidelines. However, BSAF values did exhibit a significant, nonlinear decrease with increasing log K ow and with sediment and crab PCDD/F concentrations. The correlation between BSAFs and sediment concentrations accounts for between 14 and 81% of the variability in the BSAF values. The PCDD/F congeners that are present in low concentrations and/or have reduced bioavailability are the congeners that have the strongest correlations between the BSAFs and the sediment PCDD/F concentrations. Congeners that are bioavailable to Dungeness crab exhibit poorer correlations between the BSAFs and sediment concentrations.

Review of data from several contaminated sediment sites suggested that biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) declined with increasing contaminant concentrations in the sediment. To evaluate the consistency and possible causes of this behavior, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated sediment samples from the Hudson, Grasse, and Fox River Superfund sites were used in sediment bioaccumulation tests with the freshwater oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus, with PCB concentrations in interstitial water (IW) quantified using polyoxymethylene passive samplers. Measured BSAFs tended to decrease with increasing PCB concentration in sediment, especially for the more highly chlorinated congeners. Measures of partitioning between sediment, IW, and oligochaetes showed that measured sediment-IW partition coefficients (KTOC ) tended to increase slightly with increasing sediment contamination, whereas the ratio of tissue PCB to IW PCB tended to decrease with increasing concentration in IW. Variation in accumulation among sediments was clearly influenced by bioavailability, as reflected by IW measurements, although the specific cause of varying KTOC was not clear. Calculated partitioning between IW and organism lipid (Klipid ) indicated that accumulation was generally 5 to 10-fold higher than would be predicted if Klipid was approximately equal to the n-octanol-water partition coefficient (KOW ). While affirming previous observations of decreasing BSAFs with increasing PCB contamination, the relatively shallow slope of the observed relationship in the current data may suggest that this concentration dependence is not a major uncertainty in sediment risk assessment, particularly if measurements of PCBs in IW are incorporated.

Abstract-To validate the standardization of a laboratory protocol for measuring bioaccumulation, laboratory-derived tissue residues and biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were compared with historical field data from nine sites in Ontario, Canada. As a result of temporal discontinuity between the field and the laboratory studies, a priori considerations, such as changes in site conditions or concentrations of contaminants in sediment, were necessary to assess whether to compare absolute or relative measures of bioaccumulation. For the majority of sites, BSAFs for field-collected and laboratory-exposed fish were within a factor of 2. Biotasediment accumulation factors for laboratory-exposed oligochaetes were typically greater than those for mussels caged in the field, by a factor of 2 to 9. Overall, the laboratory methods for all species generally overestimated the relative bioavailability of contaminants compared with field conditions by a factor of 1.1 to 9.2. Other than the great disparity observed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) between field and laboratory studies, on average the laboratory-derived BSAFs with Pimephales promelas and Lumbriculus variegatus overestimated those from field-collected fish and field-exposed mussels by factors of 1.6 and 3.6, respectively. The laboratory method reflects a potentially worst-case exposure scenario and provides an appropriately conservative estimate of bioaccumulation. Laboratory-based estimates can be comparable to bioaccumulation data from the field but may be confounded by species-specific differences in routes of exposure and bioaccumulation of certain compounds or other environmental and biological factors that should be considered in these comparisons.
