Concentration Level and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in PM2.5 in Ambient Air of Makkah City, Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Exposure to air pollution in general and Particulate Matter (PM) and its constituents, in particular, can be extremely harmful to human health. Given the importance of PM and its constituents concerning human health, this study aimed to evaluate the levels of PM 2.5 and some HMs in the atmosphere of Makkah City, Saudi Arabia, and assess the health risks associated with exposure to HMs. The 24-h mean concentration of PM 2.5 in Makkah city was 38.0±13.5 µg/m 3 which exceeded the WHO air quality guidelines and na… Show more

“…The addition of specific combinations of trace metals to diesel fuel can increase its toxicity, even though these metals may not be individually harmful (Hedfi et al 2013 ). Notably, certain metals like chromium, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, and lead are classified as carcinogens (Abdulaziz et al 2022 ; Agarwal et al 2017 ). Given these health and environmental risks, trace metal analysis of biodiesel, as a cleaner alternative fuel, is crucial.…”

“…Human risk analysis is a methodical approach that involves evaluating, managing, and establishing the correlation between environmental pollutants and their impact on human health 40 . In this study, the risk assessment model for human health, as provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 41,42 , was employed to evaluate the potential health effects, both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic, resulting from exposure to heavy metals present in the ambient air of Ahvaz city.…”
