Concentration, Source, and Potential Human Health Risk of Heavy Metals in the Commonly Consumed Medicinal Plants

Abstract: A trend toward the use of traditional and herbal medicines has developed nowadays, and there is a growing concern regarding them being polluted with heavy metals. This study measured the heavy metal concentrations in eight different types of medicinal herbs and eight different types of herbal distillates sold in the markets in Sanandaj, Kurdistan, Iran. The concentration of some metals (Cd, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Al, Co, Ni, Cr, Pb, and Mg) was quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the assoc… Show more

“…Consumption of contaminated food can cause more than 200 risks of acute and chronic diseases, from digestive infections to cancer [95]. Numerous studies have shown that heavy metals exert dangerous effects on human health, causing cancer, damage to the nervous system, blood composition [96][97][98].…”

“…The interest in the effects of heavy metals on medicinal plants has increased in recent decades, articulating the acute need to monitor and analyze the condition of medicinal plants affected by the presence of heavy metals, in order to avoid health hazards. The risks to human health associated with the presence of heavy metals in medicinal plants have led to the establishment of safety standards for herbal remedies that provide for maximum permitted concentrations for some heavy metals in natural remedies [96].…”

“…Выводы о зависимости содержания кадмия в ЛРС от места сбора образцов хорошо согласуются с данными литературы, согласно которым содержание кадмия, превышающее норму, зафиксировано в некоторых образцах ЛРП и ЛРС из ближневосточного региона [31][32][33], а также из регионов, отягощенных антропогенным влиянием [4,34,35].…”

“…Pollution of the environment with heavy metals causes these metals to penetrate plants growing on contaminated soils [19,20]. The European Pharmacopeia sets limits for some popular heavy metals, including cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, cobalt, nickel, vanadium and thallium, which can be found in plant materials [21,22]. No additional regulations need to be set for other heavy metals that can be detected in medicinal plants, including, aluminium, iron, copper and zinc [22].…”
