Concentrations of SP1 and ß-hCG in serum and cerebrospinal fluid and concentrations of hCG in urine in patients with trophoblastic tumour

Abstract: Using immunological techniques urinary hCG, pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) and beta-subunit of hCG (beta-hCG) levels were measured in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with trophoblastic tumours. After removal of hydatidiform moles, urinary hCG, beta-hCG and SP1 levels were similar, but SP1 levels tended to exceed serum beta-hCG levels. SP1 usually disappeared first. In patients with metastatic choriocarcinoma, SP1 levels appeared to be lower than beta-hCG values in serum and cerebros… Show more

“…However, in this study, serum PP5 concentrations in 50% of the patients with hydatidiform mole were lower than the normal range. This indicates the measurement of SP1 is a more valuable parameter for hydatidiform mole management than PP5 [Soma et al, 1981]. The role of PP5 in trophoblastic tumor requires much more study.…”

“…Two months after the beginning of successful chemotherapy the temporary elevation of isolated SP-1 concentration should be interpreted as a consequence of oncolysis and not an early sign of recurrence of the tumor. In case of recur rence, SP-1 level shows stagnation in the pathological range or a steady elevation, accompanied by high P-hCG concentration [12,11]. The elevation of SP-1 during and after some months of chemotherapy of metastatic trophoblastic tumor and its absence in cases of smaller volume tumors may indicate that this phenomenon can only be observed in cases with larger volume tumors.…”

“…In some cases, differential levels of hCG in clinical samples can pinpoint the site of metastases (e.g. a serum-CSF ratio of greater than 60:1 is indicative of spread to the brain) (Soma et al, 1981;Bagshawe, 1984;Hammond et al, 1984).…”
