“…This “all-at-once nonlinear rational-intuitive moment-to-moment birthing of novel conceptualizations” (Parse, 2018b, p. 157) was used by the scholar to clarify the phenomenon of feeling ashamed from a personal perspective and in a manner consistent with the humanbecoming paradigm. The now-truth that arose from the scholar’s concept inventing was “ Feeling ashamed is anguishing silence with desired escape arising with judgmental glare of diverse engagements ” (Shaughnessy, 2018a, p. 114). Anguishing silence with desired escape expresses the profound discomfort and quiet concealment that arise in feeling ashamed, which emerge with a longing to separate from the situation.…”

“…The culmination of the scholar’s concept inventing was the creation of an ingenuous proclamation, which brought the novel conceptualization of feeling ashamed up to the level of the humanbecoming paradigm. The ingenuous proclamation that arose from the scholar’s concept inventing was “ feeling ashamed is imaging the powering of connecting-separating ” (Shaughnessy, 2018a, p. 114). The ingenuous proclamation was also expressed through the selection of an artform: a painting entitled Shame by Alison Skaggs (2010) (see Shaughnessy, 2018a for details).…”

“…After exploring many sources across a variety of disciplines, three themes emerged: (a) Shame propels miring in paralysis, (b) shame captures the illusionary seen-unseen, and (c) shame permeates the struggle for identity (Shaughnessy, in press).…”

“…Shame has been written about extensively by scholars across many disciplines and yet remains poorly understood, particularly from a nursing perspective. Within nursing, shame is just beginning to be explored (Shaughnessy, in press). Much of the shame research that has been conducted in nursing is quantitative and focused on determining whether, and to what degree, shame is correlated with various health conditions (Kim & Im, 2015; Koç & Çinarli, 2015; Puharić, Borovac, & Petrov, 2015; Saint Arnault & O’Halloran, 2016; Wang et al, 2015).…”

“…Another exemplar utilizing a nursing theoretical perspective is the humanbecoming paradigm. Utilizing this perspective, one author described feeling ashamed as “anguishing silence with desired escape arising with judgmental glare of diverse engagements” (Shaughnessy, 2018, p. 115). This definition informs the nurse of the nuances, commonalities, and experiences as uniquely lived and described by persons.…”
