Concept to Enrichen Lightweight, Neutral Data Formats with CAD-based Feature Technology

Abstract: The need of feature information in CAD-systems is undisputed. In order to accelerate the product development process, the use of features should be considered to its full extent. With neutral, lightweight data formats becoming more popular in terms of replacing native CAD-data in many follow up processes in the scope of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), a consistent use of feature information in such formats must be adapted. By the example of JT, we present a concept to combine neutral, lightweight data form… Show more

“…With regard to this, Nguyen et al [18] proposed a method for reducing the size of lightweight models by representing a triangular mesh model and a B-rep model in hybrid. Furthermore, Eigner et al [19] suggested a method for using the JT file together with an XML file that contains additional information in order to improve the utilization of the JT file. Kwon et al [20] proposed adaptable lightweighting procedures of 3D CAD models considering various semantics during the lifecycle of plants.…”

“…It can be an addition to the JT-format. [28] There are first approaches to translate complete models from one CAD-system to another [29], but those are incomplete, not standardized and the tools cannot be used to share product data with other systems besides the target CAD-system.…”

“…These formats offer potential for cost savings by the reduction of license fees, to reduce time to market, and to improve interoperability in heterogeneous system landscapes. For a business strategy, the main objective is to establish one standardized data format for all engineering downstream processes [9], [10].…”
