Conceptualising human and non-human marginalisation in tourism

Abstract: The tourism industry can bring benefits to its stakeholders. However, some actors receive more benefits and/or disadvantages than others. This is related to marginalisation. As such, it is imperative to understand how the process of marginalisation occurs in tourism destinations. Previous studies have depicted cases of marginalisation in the tourism industry. Yet, there has been a dearth of analysis of the conceptualisation of the process of marginalisation within the industry. Consequently, this conceptual pa… Show more

“…Drawing upon existing research on marginalization (Abdullah et al , 2023; Boxall et al , 2018; Rosenbaum, 2015), this empirical investigation explores family tourists with children's vulnerabilities, resource constraints and service exclusion. Analyzing consumer reviews with various techniques, such as text mining, t -test and multidimensional scaling, allows one to listen to marginalized accounts directly, giving evidence-driven policy and managerial insights.…”

“…This paper will apply transformative service research (TSR) to examine actual reviews from families traveling with young children to enhance our understanding of the subject with greater empirical rigor. TSR has focused on experiencing vulnerability and marginalization from the lack of inclusive service (Abdullah et al , 2023; Boxall et al , 2018; Rosenbaum, 2015). Wünderlich et al (2020) have identified a situation where a service provider and a consumer fail to co-create value due to a lack of access to tangible (e.g.…”

“…These experiences are materialized through the sale of souvenirs featuring various representations of bears, representing an anthropocentric activity that contradicts the idea of posthumanism. The immediate economic profits of souvenir sellers benefit tourism, often disregarding the rights of non-human animals [40,128], leading to their marginalization [129].…”

“…This has precipitated disappointment and (sometimes) conflict between local communities and the large state-owned assets located in rural communities as communities do not feel that they significantly benefit from these assets (Spenceley & Goodwin, 2007;Strickland-Munro, Moore & Freitag-Ronaldson, 2010;Rylance & Spenceley, 2013). As highlighted by Abdullah, Lee & Carr (2023) the uneven benefits from tourism development between different actors in destinations relates to issues of marginalisation. In South Africa, one of the channels demonstrated to address marginality and promote improved economic development prospects within rural communities is support for the development of local small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) which emerged as a core policy focus of government in the post-apartheid period (Kirsten & Rogerson, 2002;Rogerson, 2004;Giddy, Idahosa & Rogerson, 2020;Sixaba & Rogerson, 2023).…”
