Conchological variability of Anadara kagoshimensis (Bivalvia: Arcidae) in the northern part of the Black–Azov Sea basin

Abstract: Features of shape and size variability of blood ark (Anadara kagoshimensis) inhabiting biotopes in the northern part of the Black and Azov Seas were studied. Fourteen morphometric traits were measured for each blood ark shell. The principal component analysis extracted only one principal component (PC) whose eigenvalue is greater than 1.0. The PC 1 explained 84.5 % of the variation in morphometric traits and was interpreted to be an integral indicator of mollusk shell size. The variation of morphometric traits… Show more

“…The Spit of Biryuchiy Island is connected with the mainland by the narrow (in some places 100 m) Fedotov Spit of alluvial origin. The Spit of Biryuchiy Island has a length of 25 km, its width reaches from 3 to 5 km (Mirzoeva & Zhukov, 2021). The southern shore of the spit is flat, sandy, the northern one has numerous small bays.…”

“…The vegetation type and humidity was shown to influence the variation in shell shape of Chondrula tridens [26]. Shell shape also changes according to the level of anthropogenic pressure [27].…”

“…Significant efforts by the international community may lead to a reduction in eutrophication, but the role of this factor will remain important for decades to come (Strokal & Kroeze, 2013). The monitoring of water quality and eutrophication in real time is essential for making adequate management decisions and conserving biodiversity (Lai et al, 2021;Mirzoeva & Zhukov, 2021). Earth remote sensing data provide sufficient opportunities for solving such problems.…”
