Conclusion

Abstract

In the conclusion, I contend that migrants juggle resources to negotiate social boundaries in ephemeral, situational, often contradictory, and not always conscious ways, in order to navigate swiftly vanishing and appearing chances and barriers to their generation of capital. Through my analysis, the complex interplay of different systems of value in migrants’ interactions and the pivotal role of those that prioritize resources associated to Western ideas and practices throughout space and time become clear. The approach I introduce in this book, combining the study of local internal differentiation with migrants’ engagement in transnational social fields, enables me to show that internal diversity constitutes both a reflection of and a tool to engage with various, often diverging, systems of value.
