Concurrence of Sarcoidosis and Lung Cancer

Abstract: Although sarcoidosis and lung cancer are both frequently encountered conditions, their simultaneous occurrence in the same patient is unusual. In this report, we describe 4 cases of their concurrence and discuss the possible pathogenic mechanisms of their concurrent appearance. In particular, in 2 of the cases, both diseases had coexisted for a long period (more than 6 and 4 years, respectively), showing a surprisingly slow growth of cancers. Although the chest computed tomography showed hilar and mediastinal … Show more

“…Combining 18 F-␣ -methyltyrosine PET imaging might help characterizing individual lesions in patients with coexisting cancer and sarcoidosis [20,21] . In France, the mean number of examinations per year for 1 PET or PET/CT camera is around 2,000-2,500 which represents costs ranging from EUR 775 to 830 per examination (this is the reimbursement price and cost).…”

“…The link between sarcoidosis and lung cancer has been controversial ever since 1973 when Brincker and Wilbek proposed that the disease sarcoidosis can induce the development of solid neoplasms by an unknown mechanism [2]. It has been postulated that lung cancer originates in fibrous tissue found with sarcoidosis [3]. Another theory postulates that cell-mediated immune abnormalities induced by sarcoidosis is involved in the onset of lung cancer [3].…”

“…It has been postulated that lung cancer originates in fibrous tissue found with sarcoidosis [3]. Another theory postulates that cell-mediated immune abnormalities induced by sarcoidosis is involved in the onset of lung cancer [3]. Therealso exists an oncocentric theory that postulates sarcoidosis as an immunological reaction to dispersal of tumor antigens [4].…”

“…In the literature, the association between sarcoidosis and hematologic or solid malignancy has been suggested, but the subject largely remains controversial [18,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27]. The sarcoidosis-related cancer reported is more likely to be a hematologic malignancy such as lymphoma, but solid tumors including lung cancer [13,14,15,18,24,27,28] and sarcomas have also been reported previously [29]. The postulated theory was that immunologic malfunction in sarcoidosis causes decreased surveillance for tumor or resistance against oncogenic viruses.…”
