Concurrent and Convergent Validity of the Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire

Abstract: Lifestyle issues including physical activity, diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, and self-reported stress have all been shown to predispose people to higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This study provides further psychometrics on the Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire (SLIQ), a short, easy-to-use instrument which measures all these lifestyle characteristics as a single construct. One hundred and ninety-three individuals from St. John's, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Canada completed the SLIQ and refer… Show more

“…Lifestyle-related factors included physical activity, diet, alcohol use, and smoking captured in the Simple Lifestyles Indicator Questionnaire. 22 Physical activity and diet scores ranged from 0 to 24 and 0 to 15, respectively, with higher scores suggesting a healthier lifestyle. Alcohol use was counted as the number of drinks per week, and smoking was categorized as nonsmoker or current smoker.…”

“…The scores of CCCS and JSAPC were normally distributed, thus, Pearson product–moment correlation was performed. Pearson product–moment correlation coefficient between CCCS and JSAPNC showed significantly positive correlation ( r = 0.20, p < 0.05), as shown in Table , thus indicating acceptable convergent validity (Godwin et al, ).…”

“…Skewness and kurtosis values were within the range of ±2 and indicated normally distributed variables (George & Mallery, ). We expected a correlation coefficient in the range of 0.2–0.4 for convergent validity (Godwin, Pike, Bethune, Kirby, & Pike, ).…”

“…Lifestyle issues like dietary habit, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption and self reporting stress have shown to predispose people to higher risk of developing cardiovascular illnesses and other NCD's. 7 Significant lifestyle changes due to rapid urbanization, dominance of personal transport, the introduction of labour saving devices, the easy availability of high fat and dense caloric food, increased communication devices as well as decreased occupational work demand. 8 The rapid change of today's society has brought a change in our lifestyle.…”
