Concurrent simulation and optimization models for mining planning

Abstract: One of the most important challenges for mining engineers is to correctly analyze and generate short-term planning schedules, or simply month mining plan. The objective is to demonstrate how simulation and optimization models were combined, with simultaneous execution, in order to achieve a feasible, reliable and accurate solution for this problem. A tool based on Arena simulation software and Lingo was developed, tested and approved within VALE (former CVRD Brazil), with excellent results, presented in this p… Show more

“…This system is similar to existing ones [2,9,12]. An interesting aspect of an open-pit mining truck dispatch simulator is that it can reproduce the mine characteristics as it executes the vehicle dispatch plan [13]. The simulation system developed has an interface that receives the mining scenario to be simulated, the set of trucks in operation, and the sequence of dispatches that will be received by each truck.…”

“…Software implemented to study railway related problems are: RailSys [2], SIMUL8 [14], SIMONE [16], Open Track [17] and ROMA [17]. Also, Arena software has been used for used to study rail related applications [4], [10] and [15]. Although Arena is not a specific package for railway this has a variety of features that allow its use in different railway analyses or the specific studies in the rail yards [19].…”

“…1). According to the method proposed by [3] and [10], the development of a conceptual model is an important step in a simulation study. In railroads, for example, there is high degree of complexity in the movement of trains in the network because the decisions that are made to resolve problems often are not standardised.…”

“…Gurgur et al [4] proposed a LP model for short-term planning, but do not consider mine operations in detail. Fioroni et al [5] proposed a simulation optimisation model to generate short-term mine plans over monthly resolution. Their model does not consider any mining precedence constraints limiting it to run over shorter time horizons.…”
