Concurrent Validity and Reliability of Sprinting Force–Velocity Profile Assessed With GPS Devices in Elite Athletes

Abstract: Purpose: The aims of this study were to (1) assess the concurrent validity of global positioning systems (GPSs) against a radar device to measure sprinting force–velocity (F–v) profiles and (2) evaluate the interunit reliability of 10-Hz GPS devices (Vector S7, Catapult Innovations). Methods: Sixteen male elite U18 rugby union players (178.3 [7.6] cm; 78.3 [13.2] kg) participated. Two 50-m sprints interspersed with at least 5 minutes of recovery were completed to obtain input (maximal sprint speed and accelera… Show more

“…This accuracy of position-time or velocitytime measurement has been shown for linear encoder technology [9][10][11], lasers [12,13], radars [12,14], global positioning systems (GPS) [15,16], and timing gates [17]. On this basis, sprint specific horizontal force production capacities have recently been studied via the "force-velocity profile" approach using the 1080 Sprint motorized linear encoder technology [18], the MuscleLab laser system [19], Stalker ATS II radar [20], Catapult Vector S7 GPS [21], and the Microgate timing gates [22].…”

“…The physiological data were collected using heart rate monitors (Polar H1 chest strap, Polar Electro Oy, Kempele, Finland). The validity and reliability of both devices have been reported acceptable (Clavel et al, 2022;Crang et al, 2022;Schaffarczyk et al, 2022). Both physical data and physiological data were processed in OpenField (Catapult Sports, Melbourne, Australia, Version 3.3.1).…”
