Generative Engineering is a new paradigm for the development of cyber-physical systems. Rather than developing a single, increasingly more detailed model of a system, multiple architectural variants are computationally generated and evaluated, which would be prohibitively expensive to do by hand. Existing synthesis approaches are geared towards finding one solution fast, but this makes them less effective for generative engineering where we are interested in enumerating many or all solutions. The common approach in generative engineering is to compute a new verification problem per generated architecture, despite all being variants of the same verification problem. This makes the tools unable to exploit commonalities and they end up doing much of the same verification work over and over again. Our work addresses this inefficiency in the synthesis of all correct-by-construction logical architectures of a system with a simple but effective approach. We create only one parameterized verification problem per use case, and, by exploiting the assumption mechanism of SMT solvers, we can very efficiently and incrementally check each generated architecture. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that this approach is orders of magnitude faster than the typical synthesis approach.

The point has repeatedly been made that validation is a crucial success factor in demonstrating the scientific contribution and ensuring the adoption of results. Still, researchers in design science validate their research findings too infrequently. We must all evaluate our claimed contributions on open benchmarks to improve validation quality and foster cumulative research. In this paper, we propose a meta-model to standardise and operationalise the concept of open scientific benchmarks in design science and to guide communities of researchers in the co-development of scientific benchmarks.

Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is an auspicious approach to the virtual development of cyber-physical systems. The behavior of the system’s elements is thus represented by specialized simulation models that are integrated into the descriptive SysML-based system model. Although many simulation models have been developed in research for the common system elements for various purposes and fidelities, their integration remains a major challenge: the parameter interfaces of the simulation models must be coupled with each other and with the parameters of the system elements in such a way that they are correctly parameterized. So far, this coupling can only be carried out by model experts in a time-consuming and error-prone manner. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a concept that structures the system element parameters for targeted use in validation and design cases. Second, we propose a model signature for simulation models that differentiates its parameters by input, internal, output, and model parameters and specifies them with spatial and temporal dimensions as well as admissible ranges, among others. Based on the two contributions, domain models can be validly and automatable coupled and used for the virtual development of system elements in model-based systems engineering.
