The strain gauge method and the digital image correlation (DIC) method are commonly employed for measuring strain in tested objects, including material specimens and structural elements. The optical method enables the assessment of 3D strain fields across the entire area of interest, achieved through cameras and advanced software. The study investigates both quasi-static strength tests and more advanced research of structures. It explores full-scale construction testing, featuring highly stressed components of new wagon designs. The paper reviews the benefits and challenges of using the DIC method to measure large-scale elements. Conducting full-scale object testing is characterized by significant complexity, often involving interactions between elements, complex loading conditions, and the influence of friction. Numerous factors affect the measurements. Therefore, to compare both methods, an initially standard shear by tensile test of CFRP composite was analyzed. The analysis of strain maps provides valuable visualization of deformation patterns occurring during construction loading. The strain gauge method was crucial for verifying the quality of the DIC measurements. The results obtained provide a detailed understanding of how the components behave, highlighting the versatility of digital image correlation technology. For strain values of 0.3% and above, a good match was obtained between optical and strain gauge measurements. Below this value, the results have less accuracy. The error comparison and discussion between different measurement scenarios were conducted. The paper presents a developed methodology for measuring strain and displacement state in complex and crucial structural elements. The method can be applied to measurements of heavily loaded components used in the transportation industry; for example, in railways.

Solution for Determining Modulus of Elasticity of Natural Materials Using Vibrations of Non-Uniform Circular Cross-Section Cantilevers

The article presents an original method for determining the modulus of elasticity of natural materials. A studied solution was based on vibrations of non-uniform circular cross-section cantilevers solved using Bessel functions. The derived equations, together with experimental tests, allowed for calculating the material’s properties. Assessments were based on the measurement of the free-end oscillations in time using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. They were induced manually and positioned at the end of a cantilever and monitored in time using a fast Vision Research Phantom v12.1 Camera with 1000 fps. GOM Correlate software tools were then used to find increments of deflection on a free end in every frame. It provided us with the ability to make diagrams containing a displacement–time relation. To find natural vibration frequencies, fast Fourier transform (FFT) analyses were conducted. The correctness of the proposed method was compared with a three-point bending test performed on a Zwick/Roell Z2.5 testing machine. The presented solution generates trustworthy results and can provide a method to confirm the elastic properties of natural materials obtained in various experimental tests.

The article presents the possibilities of dynamic measurements of building structures based on the ARAMIS SRX measurement system. It is a system consisting of high-resolution 3D cameras with the possibility of filming up to 500 frames per second. The stability of the sensor and the high frequency of image recording enable precise three-dimensional measurements of displacements and deformations caused by static or dynamic loads. Thanks to dynamic measurements, it is possible to analyze the redistribution of stresses, both of small elements and large elements of a structure. Moreover, the article presents exemplary tests of the connection of the profile of the parapet supporting structure subjected to dynamic wind loads. Two different states of dynamic gusts were analyzed: maximum suction and maximum wind pressure, assumed periodically as a sinusoidal function.
