Condom use behavioural skills mediate the relationship between condom use motivation and condom use behaviour among young adult heterosexual males: An information-motivation-behavioural skills analysis

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between condom use motivation and condom use behavioural skills, and their direct and mediated influence on condom use consistency from the perspective of the Information-Motivation-Behavioural Skills (IMB) model of health behaviour. Participants were 149 currently sexually active heterosexual males aged 18–24 (M=18.6). “… Shumlich and Fisher’s (2019) application of the IMB model, a model that has been used to study a range of sexual and reproductive health behaviours (e.g. Camilleri et al, 2015 ), to sexual consent communication further develops and formalizes these perceived barriers in a number of ways. First, they outline the role of both perceived rewards and costs of consent communication.…”

“…Because both of these elements are very different from how real-life rapes occur, it is possible that it could have been hard for participants to relate the video to the scenarios. This, however, could have increased the external validity of the video campaign because it is unlikely that media campaigns are able to demonstrate exactly what will happen in a real-life rape, which means, for such campaigns to be effective, the resulting attitudinal change needs to be applicable and generalizable to other non-consensual examples (Camilleri et al, 2015). A second reason is that there is no reason for our participants to engage with the video during its presentation (Fabiano et al, 2003;Binet and Field, 2009).…”
